TL;DR
  • Grass Patch contains 47,357t of inferred scandium, with further re-assays and untested tenure offering possible resource growth.
  • Selectro has produced promising bench-scale recoveries for scandium, gallium and heavy rare earths, but commercial-scale processing remains unproven.
  • Cashu Research rates MRD Speculative Buy with a 12-month A$0.144 target, while highlighting low grade, funding, metallurgy and commodity-market risks.
Cashu Research initiated coverage of Mount Ridley Mines on 26 August 2026, focusing on the company’s Grass Patch critical-minerals project in Western Australia. The report was commissioned and paid for by Mount Ridley Mines Limited, a disclosure that matters when weighing its positive assessment. Cashu Research rates the stock Speculative Buy with a 12-month price target of A$0.144, compared with a last close of A$0.032, implying roughly 350% upside in the research house’s model.

A large, low-grade scandium resource

Grass Patch has an upgraded inferred scandium resource of 946Mt at 50.1ppm Sc, containing 47,357t of scandium metal. Cashu Research describes it as the largest publicly reported scandium resource under the JORC Code. The project is 25km northeast of the deepwater port at Esperance, and the mineralisation is described as near-surface, free-dig regolith.
The scandium estimate covers two resource blocks, Keith and Winston; the third block, Mia, has no scandium estimate. The same rock also contains a 109kt rare earth oxide resource, including 4,272t of dysprosium and 719t of terbium, plus 24,584t of gallium. These resources overlap in the same rock volume and should not be added together, but the co-occurrence could support a processing route with several potential revenue streams.

Growth without new drilling

The resource upgrade was driven by a re-assay programme rather than additional drilling. Grass Patch has more than 70,000m of historical aircore and diamond drilling, completed when the ground was being explored for nickel and copper, but scandium was not assayed at the time. Phase 1 covered 3,271 archived pulps and increased contained scandium from 18,555t to 47,357t, a 155% rise, without a metre of new drilling.
Roughly 14,000 suitable pulps remain, with Phase 2 having commenced in mid-July and about 2,000 further pulps being collected. Cashu Research also says roughly 80% of the company’s 1,000km² tenure remains untested for scandium. That creates a potentially inexpensive exploration lever, although the report cautions that further re-assays could dilute grade rather than increase it, and that the continuity of the mineralised zones remains uncertain.

Selectro improves the processing story, but remains unproven

Mount Ridley’s wholly owned Selectro process is central to the investment case. In bench-scale testing on a single unbeneficiated composite, it recovered 80% of scandium, 56% of gallium and 77–83% of the heavy rare earths. The same composite produced a 27.6% scandium recovery under an hydrochloric-acid baseline, while gallium recovery was zero under that baseline. Mount Ridley lodged a provisional patent application for Selectro on 19 August 2026.
The results are encouraging because a single leach could potentially recover several critical minerals from one deposit. However, the testwork is not a pilot plant, does not demonstrate recovery to a saleable product and has not yet quantified reagent consumption, impurity behaviour, downstream separation or capital cost. The report assigns no value to Selectro in its target valuation, and notes that a provisional application is not a granted patent.

A strategic market with a supply gap

Cashu Research places current annual scandium oxide production at roughly 80 tonnes, against modelled 2030 demand above 300 tonnes. The report argues that supply is concentrated in by-product streams and that Western supply is limited, while scandium and gallium are subject to Chinese export licensing. It also highlights the strategic importance of the metal for aluminium alloys, fuel cells and defence-related applications.
On 7 August 2026, the US Department of War’s Office of Strategic Capital committed up to US$400m in 25-year debt to Sunrise Energy Metals’ Syerston project, with a right of first offer over its scandium output. Syerston is designed for 60t a year and Lockheed Martin already holds an option over the first 15t, so Cashu Research argues that one funded mine may not close the projected supply gap. Mount Ridley’s resource is described as roughly two and a half times Syerston’s contained scandium.

The valuation depends on re-rating, not mine economics

Mount Ridley currently trades at an enterprise value of roughly A$860 per tonne of contained scandium, compared with about A$3,400 per tonne for Rimfire Pacific, which Cashu Research identifies as the closest same-stage comparison. The metric is crude because it does not capture grade, recovery, capital intensity, jurisdiction or mine life, but the research house uses it as a consistent measure across early-stage scandium companies.
Cashu Research’s A$0.144 target applies an enterprise value of A$4,000 per tonne to the defined 47,357t resource. That produces an enterprise value of approximately A$189m and an equity value of A$191m after cash. The valuation assumes no resource growth and assigns no value to the rare earths, gallium, Selectro or Weld Range. In the report’s framing, the upside comes from the market valuing the existing resource closer to a same-stage peer multiple, rather than from a completed mine study or forecast production.

What could change the view

The next potential catalysts are Phase 2 re-assay results, density testwork, flotation and bulk testwork, Selectro optimisation, a scoping study and a demonstration plant. The report’s timeline places the scoping work and demonstration plant design in the second half of 2026, with design and construction of a Selectro demonstration plant targeted for the first half of 2027.
The main risks are substantial. All three resource estimates are Inferred, there is no Ore Reserve or economic study, and Grass Patch’s 50.1ppm scandium grade is roughly an eighth of Syerston’s and a third of Rimfire’s. Low grade can require greater strip, throughput and plant scale. Selectro must retain its recoveries at larger scale, while further work is needed to establish density, economics and product quality. The report also flags likely future funding and dilution, the absence of an exchange price or forward curve for scandium, potential China-led commodity repricing and the possibility that the re-assay programme produces weaker results.
For Cashu Research, conversion of Inferred material toward Indicated, a maiden scoping study, evidence of a higher-grade subset, or an offtake or government-backed financing discussion could justify a higher valuation multiple. The research house’s Speculative Buy rating therefore rests on a large strategic resource, early processing progress and a low starting valuation, but with elevated risk of capital loss and no demonstrated economic project yet.
