Zai Lab Expands Oncology Pipeline with MediLink Collaboration
Zai Lab Limited announces a strategic partnership with MediLink Therapeutics (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. aimed at developing ZL-6201, a novel antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) targeting the leucine-rich repeat-containing protein 15 (LRRC15). This collaboration leverages MediLink’s TMALIN® ADC platform and is poised to address significant unmet medical needs in oncology. The companies plan to file an Investigational New Drug (IND) application by 2025, signaling a commitment to advancing cancer therapies that target difficult-to-treat solid tumors. The LRRC15 protein is particularly appealing as it is overexpressed in various mesenchymal tumors, including sarcoma and glioblastoma, making it a promising target for new treatments.
Rafael G. Amado, M.D., Zai Lab’s President of Global Research and Development, emphasizes the company’s dedication to innovation in oncology. He notes that the collaboration with MediLink enhances Zai Lab’s capabilities in developing effective therapies for cancer patients. The development of ZL-6201 builds upon encouraging preclinical data and complements Zai Lab’s existing pipeline, which includes other ADCs like ZL-1310, designed to target DLL3. The ongoing clinical trials for ZL-1310, currently in Phase 1, showcase the potential efficacy of ADC therapies in treating recurrent extensive-stage small cell lung cancer, further solidifying Zai Lab’s commitment to advancing its oncology portfolio.
Tony Xue, CEO of MediLink, acknowledges the strengths that Zai Lab brings to the partnership, highlighting the strategic enhancement of their ADC technology through collaboration. This partnership signifies a vital expansion of Zai Lab’s global oncology pipeline, reinforcing its position as a leader in the development of innovative cancer therapies. The combination of Zai Lab's robust research capabilities and MediLink’s advanced ADC platform creates a promising avenue for addressing the challenges in treating solid tumors, ultimately contributing to improved patient outcomes.
In addition to ZL-6201, Zai Lab is actively advancing other ADC programs, including TIVDAK (tisotumab vedotin) and ZL-6301. The company's focused approach on developing next-generation ADCs demonstrates its commitment to exploring new frontiers in cancer treatment. This collaboration enhances its ability to innovate and deliver effective therapies for patients facing significant oncological challenges.
