UroGen Pharma's JELMYTO® Shows Promising Long-Term Efficacy in Treating LG-UTUC

UroGen Pharma Ltd. has announced encouraging results from a long-term follow-up study of its innovative treatment, JELMYTO® (mitomycin) for pyelocalyceal solution, which is FDA-approved for low-grade upper tract urothelial cancer (LG-UTUC) in adults. The findings, derived from the OLYMPUS trial, indicate that 41 of the 71 participants who received JELMYTO achieved a complete response to the treatment. Impressively, the median duration of this response is 47.8 months, with a median follow-up period of 28.1 months. These results, published in the March issue of The Journal of Urology, underscore the potential of JELMYTO for sustained disease control, an aspect highlighted by Dr. Phillip Pierorazio, who remarked on the efficacy of the treatment for nearly four years for patients who responded completely.

The long-term follow-up study emphasizes the importance of JELMYTO not just in terms of response rates but also in its treatment goals for LG-UTUC. UroGen's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Mark Schoenberg, points out that the treatment focuses on relapse prevention and the preservation of organ function, both critical considerations for patients with this condition. While the study does present limitations, including potential selection bias in the follow-up cohort, the evidence gathered thus far reinforces JELMYTO's role as a primary treatment option in clinical practice for LG-UTUC patients.

To build on these findings, UroGen is actively enrolling participants in the JELMYTO uTRACT Registry, an initiative aimed at further assessing the real-world effectiveness of JELMYTO. As of January 27, 2025, the registry has activated 21 sites and enrolled a total of 228 patients. This ongoing research is expected to yield additional insights into the long-term outcomes associated with JELMYTO, further solidifying its position in the treatment landscape for urothelial cancers.

UroGen's JELMYTO is recognized for its unique formulation as a mitomycin-containing reverse thermal gel, offering a novel approach to managing LG-UTUC. The gel transitions from a viscous liquid to a semi-solid state at body temperature, facilitating its gradual dissolution and elimination through normal urinary flow. This innovative mechanism not only enhances patient comfort but also contributes to the treatment's effectiveness, making it a significant advancement in the field of urothelial cancer therapies.
