STAAR Surgical Company Navigates Challenges Amid Strong Demand for ICL Technology
STAAR Surgical Company, recognized as a leader in the field of phakic intraocular lenses (IOLs), particularly with its EVO family of Implantable Collamer® Lenses (EVO ICL™), releases its fourth-quarter and fiscal year results for 2024, highlighting both successes and challenges. For the fourth quarter, STAAR achieves net sales of $49.0 million, largely driven by its ICL sales, which contribute $46.9 million to this total. Notably, $7.5 million of these sales come from China, a key market for the company's growth strategies. Excluding Chinese sales, ICL sales see a robust 17% year-over-year increase, reaching $39.5 million, underscoring the ongoing global demand for ICL technology despite regional fluctuations.
The company's overall fiscal performance indicates a significant reliance on ICL sales, which total $312.5 million for the year, including a substantial $161.0 million from China alone. This reliance is evident as ICL sales outside of China also witness a commendable 13% increase, amounting to $151.6 million. However, STAAR faces a notable net loss of $20.2 million for the fiscal year, contrasting sharply with the net income of $21.3 million from the previous year. The decline in profitability is compounded by a decrease in adjusted EBITDA to $23.2 million from $56.8 million a year prior, alongside a slight dip in gross margin to 76.3%. CEO Tom Frinzi attributes the overall performance challenges primarily to diminished demand in China and a decline in refractive procedures, yet he remains optimistic about double-digit growth prospects in other global markets in 2025.
Positioned with $230.5 million in cash and investments, STAAR demonstrates resilience and a strategic approach to navigating current market challenges. The company’s leadership emphasizes its commitment to maintaining its position in the refractive market while recovering demand in China. As the global appetite for ICL technology persists, STAAR's focus remains on leveraging market growth strategies to offset recent downturns, aiming for a stronger performance in the coming fiscal year.
In a separate development, the Schall Law Firm has initiated an investigation into STAAR Surgical Company regarding potential violations of securities laws. The firm is examining whether STAAR misled investors or failed to disclose critical information, particularly following the company's disappointing earnings report. This scrutiny raises concerns among shareholders, especially since STAAR's stock experienced a notable drop of 24.68% in response to the earnings announcement.
The Schall Law Firm invites affected investors to seek legal consultation concerning their rights, emphasizing the importance of being aware of potential securities law violations. As the investigation unfolds, it highlights the need for transparency and accountability within the rapidly evolving medical device industry, where stakeholder trust is paramount.
