Sonoma Biotherapeutics Secures G-Rex® Grant to Advance Treg Therapy Development

Sonoma Biotherapeutics has recently received a significant boost in its research and development efforts with the awarding of a $300,000 G-Rex® Grant. This grant, announced on November 3, 2025, through a collaboration involving ScaleReady, Wilson Wolf Manufacturing, Bio-Techne Corporation, and CellReady, aims to enhance the manufacturing process for gene-modified regulatory T cell (Treg) therapies. These therapies are designed to address various autoimmune disorders, marking a pivotal step toward potential clinical trials. John Wilson, CEO of Wilson Wolf and co-inventor of the G-Rex technology, highlights the grant's critical role in transitioning Sonoma Biotherapeutics from traditional open flask technology to a more efficient and commercially viable G-Rex platform.

The G-Rex Grant will enable Sonoma Biotherapeutics to implement innovative optimization strategies for its Treg platform, which is essential for establishing a modular and scalable manufacturing approach. The integration of closed system G-Rex devices and ProPak™ GMP Cytokines is a key focus, providing the necessary infrastructure to support the growth of Treg therapies. Furthermore, Sonoma will gain early access to cutting-edge innovations from Wilson Wolf, including integrated process analytic technology and new G-Rex models, which are expected to enhance both the efficacy and efficiency of the manufacturing process.

The G-Rex Grant Program, spearheaded by ScaleReady, has surpassed $40 million in no-cost product commitments aimed at bolstering the development of cell and gene-modified therapies (CGT). Each grant recipient also benefits from exclusive resources offered by ScaleReady's consortium of partners, which encompass areas vital to CGT development such as cGMP manufacturing and regulatory affairs. In addition to the G-Rex Grant, ScaleReady has unveiled a new initiative called LEAN Cell & Gene™, in partnership with Hanson Wade. This program is designed to assist CGT entities in improving manufacturing efficiency and quality through a series of free educational events.

As Sonoma Biotherapeutics advances its Treg therapy initiatives, the G-Rex Grant represents a crucial investment in the future of autoimmune disorder treatments. The collaboration between established companies and innovative biotech firms exemplifies the ongoing commitment to enhancing the potential of gene-modified therapies in clinical settings. This strategic partnership will likely pave the way for the successful commercialization of effective therapies that address unmet medical needs in autoimmune diseases.
