The company reports a net income of $1.52 per diluted share and a non-GAAP operating income of $1.62 per diluted share. The return on common equity (ROE) stands at 12.7%, with a non-GAAP operating ROE of 13.5%. For the full year, Selective Insurance reveals a net income of $3.23 per diluted share, coupled with a non-GAAP operating income of $3.27. The annual combined ratio reflects challenges as well, standing at 103.0%, influenced by a substantial $311 million in prior year casualty reserve strengthening that contributes an additional 7.1 points. The company continues to see positive trends in NPW, which grows by 12%, supported by a 9.5% increase in renewal pure prices. After-tax net investment income for the year reaches $363 million, marking a 17% increase from the prior year and contributing 12.8 points to annualized ROE.
In a statement, Chairman and CEO John J. Marchioni emphasizes the company's solid underlying profitability in insurance operations while acknowledging the necessity of strengthening casualty reserves due to the pressures of social inflation. He outlines key strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing growth and profitability, including successfully surpassing $500 million in NPW for Excess & Surplus Lines and expanding their footprint in Standard Commercial Lines. Marchioni's focus on pricing actions and proactive reserve management positions Selective Insurance Group for sustained growth in a challenging environment.
As Selective Insurance navigates the complexities of the insurance industry, its commitment to strategic growth initiatives and robust financial performance continues to reinforce its standing in the market. The company remains focused on addressing the evolving challenges posed by social inflation while exploring avenues for expansion and profitability in its specialized offerings.
