Duke University and NEON Collaborate to Empower Talented Scholars from Low-Income Backgrounds
In a significant educational initiative, Duke University partners with the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity and the National Education Opportunity Network (NEON) to provide over 200 talented scholars from low-income high schools an opportunity to engage in a college-level course in spring 2026. This collaboration arises from the shared conviction that while talent is universally present, access to opportunities remains uneven. By offering a course taught by a Duke professor, the program aims to enhance educational access and promote economic mobility among underrepresented students.
NEON, a non-profit organization established in 2019, has already made considerable strides in this area, serving over 50,000 scholars across 34 states and 160 cities by providing college credit-bearing courses at no cost. Gary Bennett, Dean of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences at Duke, emphasizes the transformative potential of education, expressing enthusiasm for the partnership's prospects. The initiative not only aims to elevate the educational experiences of these high school students but also fosters a sense of community and support among them. The collaborative effort reflects a broader commitment to addressing systemic inequalities in education and is expected to have a lasting impact on the communities these students represent.
The course, titled "Medical Sociology: Who Gets Sick and Why?," will be taught by Duke professor Tyson Brown and will explore the intricate relationship between social structures and health outcomes. Participants will have access to video lectures, engage in weekly Zoom sessions with college near-peers, and receive guidance from their high school teachers. This comprehensive support system is designed to cultivate an enriched learning environment that mirrors the experience of Duke undergraduates. NEON’s director, Vivian Zelter, highlights the importance of this initiative, noting that it provides invaluable exposure to higher education while empowering students to envision their futures. Dean Bennett anticipates that the students involved will emerge as impactful leaders in their communities, ultimately contributing to a more equitable society.
In addition to this educational initiative, NEON continues to expand its reach, demonstrating a commitment to bridging the opportunity gap for students from diverse backgrounds. By engaging with talented individuals in underserved communities, NEON reinforces its mission of fostering educational equity and economic advancement. The collaborative project with Duke University stands as a testament to the potential of partnerships in creating meaningful change within the education sector.
Overall, the Duke and NEON partnership marks a crucial step toward addressing educational disparities and empowering the next generation of leaders, showcasing the profound impact that targeted educational opportunities can have on individuals and their communities.
