MACOM Technology Solutions Unveils Ambitious Investment in Semiconductor Manufacturing

MACOM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. announces a transformative five-year investment strategy totaling up to $345 million, focused on modernizing its semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities in Massachusetts and North Carolina. This initiative is not just a financial commitment; it represents a significant step towards enhancing the company’s manufacturing capabilities in advanced radio frequency (RF), microwave, and millimeter-wave technologies. Such technologies are integral to sectors such as defense, telecommunications, and data centers. The investment aligns with MACOM's growth strategy and its commitment to strengthening domestic manufacturing in the semiconductor industry.

The funding framework for this initiative is robust and multifaceted. MACOM has secured a preliminary agreement with the CHIPS Program Office, positioning the company to potentially access up to $70 million in direct funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce under the CHIPS and Science Act. Additionally, the company anticipates up to $180 million in further support, which includes federal funding, tax credits, and state incentives. Notably, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative is set to contribute approximately $15.7 million, while MACOM plans to self-fund the remaining $165 million through its operating cash flow. Such a well-structured financial plan underscores the company’s strategic foresight and commitment to innovation in the semiconductor landscape.

Key infrastructure enhancements will take place at both facilities. In Massachusetts, the investment will facilitate the expansion of clean rooms, modernization of production lines for Gallium Arsenide (GaAs), Gallium Nitride (GaN), and other materials, and the installation of new manufacturing capabilities. The North Carolina site will also benefit from clean room expansions and the introduction of 150mm wafer production capabilities, including advanced Metal-Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) epitaxial growth technologies. MACOM President and CEO Stephen G. Daly emphasizes that these improvements not only bolster the company’s operational capabilities but also position it strategically within a rapidly evolving semiconductor market.

In the broader context, the CHIPS for America initiative has already committed over $33 billion in funding aimed at creating over 125,000 jobs across 22 states, showcasing a growing national commitment to semiconductor manufacturing. Since the Biden-Harris Administration began, semiconductor companies have announced nearly $450 billion in private investments, highlighting a vibrant and competitive industry landscape.

As MACOM embarks on this significant investment journey, it reinforces its pivotal role in advancing semiconductor manufacturing in the United States and positions itself for future growth in a critical sector of the global economy.
