MACOM Technology Solutions Embarks on Major Manufacturing Modernization Initiative

MACOM Technology Solutions Holdings, Inc. announces a transformative five-year investment plan worth up to $345 million aimed at modernizing its semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities located in Massachusetts and North Carolina. This strategic initiative aligns with the broader goals of the U.S. government’s CHIPS and Science Act, which seeks to bolster domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. The preliminary agreement with the CHIPS Program Office opens the door for up to $70 million in direct funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce, enhancing MACOM's potential to significantly upgrade its production capabilities and technological infrastructure.

The investment will focus on expanding clean rooms and modernizing production lines for materials such as Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) and Gallium Nitride (GaN), both critical for advanced RF, microwave, and millimeter-wave semiconductor technologies. These technologies are not only essential for defense applications but also play a pivotal role in telecommunications and data center operations. The Massachusetts facility is set to undergo significant enhancements, while the North Carolina site will add 150mm wafer production capabilities, further solidifying MACOM's presence in the semiconductor landscape. The company’s President and CEO, Stephen G. Daly, underscores the importance of this investment as a vital step in strengthening the company’s domestic manufacturing footprint and supporting its long-term growth strategy.

In addition to the direct funding from the CHIPS Program, the investment structure includes potential support of up to $180 million through a combination of federal funding, tax credits, and state incentives. The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative will contribute up to $15.7 million, while MACOM plans to self-fund the remaining $165 million from its operating cash flow. This initiative not only reflects MACOM’s commitment to innovation and technology but also aligns with the CHIPS for America initiative, which has already allocated more than $33 billion in funding aimed at creating over 125,000 jobs across the United States.

As the semiconductor industry undergoes a substantial transformation, MACOM's investment positions the company to capitalize on the increasing demand for advanced semiconductor solutions. With nearly $450 billion in private investments announced by semiconductor companies since the Biden-Harris Administration began, MACOM's modernization efforts signify a strong commitment to advancing the United States' technological leadership in the semiconductor sector. This proactive approach ensures that MACOM remains competitive in an ever-evolving market, while also contributing to the broader economic objectives outlined by the government.
