Keros Therapeutics Partners with Takeda to Advance Elritercept Development for Anemia in Blood Cancers

Keros Therapeutics, Inc. announces a significant partnership with Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, marking a pivotal moment in the development of elritercept, an investigational activin inhibitor aimed at treating anemia associated with hematologic cancers. The exclusive licensing agreement grants Takeda rights to develop, manufacture, and commercialize elritercept globally, with the exception of mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Elritercept targets anemia linked to conditions such as myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) and myelofibrosis (MF), which are known for causing inadequate blood cell production and severe anemia, leading to considerable health challenges for patients.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Fast Track designation to elritercept for its development in patients with very low-, low-, and intermediate-risk MDS. This designation underscores the urgency and need for effective therapies in this patient population, who often suffer from debilitating symptoms due to anemia. The drug's mechanism involves inhibiting activin A and B proteins, which are critical in the pathology of these diseases. Early clinical studies have shown elritercept to exhibit promising activity along with a manageable safety profile, reinforcing its potential to make a significant impact in the lives of patients battling these complex conditions.

Currently, elritercept is undergoing two Phase 2 clinical trials—one targeting patients with MDS and the other focusing on those with MF. Additionally, a Phase 3 trial titled RENEW is poised to begin, which will specifically investigate transfusion-dependent anemia in MDS patients. Keros Therapeutics' CEO, Jasbir S. Seehra, expresses optimism regarding the collaboration, emphasizing that Takeda's extensive experience in oncology and hematology will significantly enhance the development timeline and effectiveness of elritercept. This partnership not only highlights Keros' commitment to addressing unmet medical needs but also positions both companies to optimize treatment options for patients suffering from these challenging hematologic conditions.

In related developments, Takeda's President of the Global Oncology Business Unit, Teresa Bitetti, underscores the importance of elritercept in bolstering Takeda's oncology pipeline. The collaboration aims to create a comprehensive strategy for addressing various patient segments and therapeutic areas, thus enhancing the overall treatment landscape for anemia in blood cancers. This partnership is expected to accelerate the availability of a much-needed therapeutic option for patients facing the challenges of MDS and MF.
