GreenPower Motor Company Expands Operations with New Manufacturing Facility in New Mexico
GreenPower Motor Company, a leading manufacturer of all-electric medium and heavy-duty vehicles, announces its intention to establish a new manufacturing facility in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. This 135,000-square-foot site will serve as the company's North American operations base and corporate headquarters in the U.S. The move is set to create over 340 jobs and generate an estimated economic impact of more than $200 million within the next decade. The strategic choice of Santa Teresa, which benefits from a Foreign Trade Zone designation, positions GreenPower to efficiently produce and distribute zero-emission vehicles throughout North America, tapping into the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions.
The New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) plays a crucial role in facilitating this expansion by providing GreenPower with a $5 million Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) award, alongside job training incentive funds totaling $4.6 million and additional tax credits worth $5.01 million. This financial support underscores the state’s commitment to fostering a robust electric vehicle ecosystem and highlights New Mexico's attractiveness as a manufacturing hub. GreenPower's CEO, Fraser Atkinson, emphasizes the importance of the investment in bolstering the company’s commitment to sustainable transportation while leveraging the skilled workforce available in southern New Mexico.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham lauds the project as pivotal for job creation and for enhancing New Mexico's role in the clean energy transition. This initiative aligns with the state's broader goals of achieving net-zero emissions and promoting economic growth through innovation. The collaborative efforts between GreenPower and state officials reflect a shared vision of advancing a carbon-free energy future, with the facility reinforcing New Mexico's leadership in green manufacturing and its strategic importance in cross-border trade.
In addition to creating jobs, GreenPower's facility is expected to support New Mexico's initiative to electrify its state fleet, with plans for procuring over 5,000 zero-emission vehicles by 2035. This commitment not only facilitates the state’s energy goals but also positions New Mexico at the forefront of the electric vehicle revolution in the U.S., showcasing the potential for substantial economic and environmental benefits.
