EVgo and Meijer Expand Partnership to Enhance EV Charging Infrastructure
EVgo Inc. is making strides in its mission to create a comprehensive fast charging network for electric vehicles (EVs) by expanding its partnership with Meijer, a prominent grocery retailer in the Midwest. This collaboration aims to significantly bolster public fast charging infrastructure across six states: Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. The partnership will introduce up to 480 new public fast charging stalls at Meijer locations, building on the existing 24 stalls already operational at six stores in Michigan and Ohio. This initiative is particularly timely as EV adoption accelerates in the Midwest, reflecting a growing demand for accessible charging options.
The deployment plan includes the establishment of an additional 30 charging stations by the end of 2026, followed by another 30 by the end of 2027. EVgo President Dennis Kish highlights the necessity of integrating fast charging into consumers’ daily routines, particularly during grocery trips. With more than 35% of Meijer locations currently offering EV charging, this expanded partnership is set to enhance the convenience and accessibility of charging for customers. By positioning charging stations in grocery store parking lots, EVgo and Meijer are addressing a critical need for infrastructure that supports the increasing number of EVs on the road.
The collaboration also aligns with Meijer's sustainability objectives, as the retailer has successfully exceeded its goal of reducing carbon emissions by 50%, achieving this milestone a year ahead of schedule. Erik Petrovskis, Meijer's Director of Environmental Compliance and Sustainability, emphasizes the importance of providing access to EV charging as a cornerstone of their sustainability strategy. This partnership not only enhances EVgo’s customer-centric approach to building a nationwide charging network but is also supported by a conditional loan guarantee of up to $1.05 billion from the Department of Energy, pending final financing arrangements.
In addition to the partnership expansion, EVgo continues to prioritize the development of a reliable charging infrastructure that meets the needs of a growing EV market. The collaboration with Meijer reflects a broader trend in the industry where retailers are increasingly recognizing the value of integrating EV charging into their operations. As more consumers adopt electric vehicles, such strategic partnerships will play a pivotal role in fostering sustainable transportation solutions across the United States.
