China Automotive Systems Expands Footprint in South America with Electric Power Steering Contract
China Automotive Systems, Inc. (CAAS) makes a significant leap in its international expansion strategy by securing a contract for its Column-Assist Electric Power Steering (C-EPS) system through its subsidiary, Hubei Henglong Automotive System Group. This collaboration with a major South American automotive manufacturer marks Henglong's first substantial entry into the South American automotive supply chain, a move poised to reshape CAAS's operations in the region. The project targets a range of gasoline and hybrid passenger vehicle models, with expected annual sales surpassing 300,000 units and mass production slated to commence by early 2028.
The C-EPS system is set to revolutionize Brazil's automotive landscape, transitioning from traditional mechanical steering systems to advanced electric power steering technology. Henglong, which has established a strong foothold in the Brazilian steering system market since its first overseas factory opened in São Paulo in 2012, has captured over 30% of the market share. The company’s reputation for developing high-quality C-EPS products for European markets has attracted the interest of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in South America. This strategic move not only enhances the technological landscape of Brazil's automotive industry but also aligns with CAAS's long-term vision for growth and innovation in the global market.
CAAS's CEO, Mr. Qizhou Wu, emphasizes the importance of this initiative for the company's strategic growth in South America. The C-EPS system, which integrates an electric motor and assist mechanism directly into the steering column, offers improved efficiency and reduced space requirements, all while contributing to fuel conservation. CAAS envisions a comprehensive operational network in Brazil that will bolster the promotion of electric power steering, encompassing enhanced manufacturing capabilities, engineering collaborations, and robust after-sales support. This initiative reflects the company's commitment to technological advancements and sustainable practices in the automotive sector.
In addition to its focus on electric power steering, CAAS continues to leverage its advanced technologies and quality control capabilities to meet the evolving needs of the automotive industry. The collaboration with South American manufacturers marks a pivotal moment for Henglong, reinforcing its position as a leading supplier in the region. As CAAS aims for significant growth by 2030, the successful implementation of the C-EPS project will be crucial in establishing its presence in the competitive South American market.
This strategic contract and the anticipated mass production of electric power steering systems represent a significant milestone for CAAS and its subsidiary, paving the way for future innovations and partnerships in the global automotive supply chain.
